Adsorption of Eu
3+ to a natural montmorillonite (Kunipia F), a synthetic saponite (Sumecton SA) and Na-fluoro-tetrasilicic mica (Na-TSM) from aqueous solution was investigated. The adsorption isotherms of Eu
3+ on these layered silicates indicated that the maximum adsorbed amounts were close to the cation exchange capacities. The isotherm for Na-TSM showed the strong adsorbate-adsorbent interactions. From the photoluminescence spectra of the Eu
3+ adsorbed saponite and TSM, the structural difference affected the luminescence properties.

A new modification of the 2:1 phyllosilicate layer has been discovered in annealed celadonite, Fe
3+, Mg-rich dioctahedral mica. The high-resolution TEM image along the <100> or related directions is similar to that expected from normal micas but the image along the <010> direction is completely different. From these images, it is concluded that the two tetrahedral sheets in a 2:1 layer are facing each other with no lateral
a/3 stagger.

Many micro cracks are formed in the weathered granite slopes. Clay minerals were filled in these micro cracks with some other small fragments of rock forming minerals. These seemed to be carried from the other parts. It is considered that these clay minerals were carried through the micro cracks by the just surface ground water, and these were deposited in the fractures. In this presentation the genesis of clay minerals formed in the micro fractures will be discussed from the standpoint of the occurrence of slope failures

Chlorite associated with the ore mineralization at Toyoha epithermal ore deposit is well-known to be rich in Fe and Mn. However, the genesis is poorly understood. In this study we work on the hydrothermal alteration near the deposit using drill cores TH-2~7, which were drilled by NEDO. We paid special attension to the occurrence and chemical composition of chlorite and carbonate minerals and based on the result we will talk about the genesis of chlorite mineralization and its relationship to the ore mineralization.

Photoinduced electron transfer was observed in a multi-component colloid system consisting of clay, semiconducting layered niobate, and methylviologen (MV). In the colloid, the clay and niobate nanosheets were phase-separated, and MV species was selectively adsorbed on the clay. UV irradiation excited the niobate nanosheets from which electron transfer occurred to methylviologen. The charge-separated state was kept stably.

We have been investigating unique structure of clay-porphyrin complexes, in which porphyrin molecules do not aggregate on the clay surface even at very high density adsorption conditions. On the other hand, we found out that porphyrin molecule changes its orientation angle depending on the surrounding solvent atmosphere.
In this paper, the properties of chemical reaction field as coordination space provided clay porphyrin complexes is examined.

We found that a high density of porphyrin molecules were adsobed onto the clay layers without aggrigation. This depends on size-matching of distance between the charge sites (Size-Matching Effect). Porphyrin-clay complexes have been studied with various porphyrins. In this research, the adsorption behavior was investigated with artificially synthesized saponites that have difference distance between the charge sites.

Silylating agents containing ethylene oxide groups were synthesized by the reaction of polyethylene glycol monomethyl ethers with methyltrichlorosilane. The silylating agents react with layered silicate octosilicate to immobilize ethylene oxide groups onto interlayer surface. The regular grafting of ethylene oxide groups (MW = 550) was confirmed by XRD patterns and
29Si MAS NMR spectra.

Recently the exfoliated ultrathin sheets have attracted an extensive attention because of their application to thin film-type electronic devices. Smectite clay minerals are a unique candidate because of their abundance in nature and kindness for environment. For these purposes, we have prepared a cast film of exfoliated clay and studied its electric conduction.

Transparent self-standing clay films are developed by casting method. Eighty to ninetyfive weight percent of commercially available synthetic clay and five to twenty weight percent of carboxymethyl cellurose sodium salt or sodium polyacrylate (PA) were mixed to give an uniform paste followed by drying and peeling. The produced self standing films show high total light transparency over 90 percent and high gas barrier property. Pecular improvement on the heat durability observed in case of clay-PA composite films. The microstructure of the films were analyzed by electromicroscopy and XRD.

We report a synthesis of the microporous nanocomposite using a biphenylene-bridged chlorosilane, which contains methyldichlorosilyl groups at each end of the unit. The product shows sharper (00l) reflections than those of the nanocomposite using the alkoxysilane compound, indicating the improvement of the structural order of the stacking. The basal spacing is calculated as ca. 2.9 nm. The large basal spacing suggests that the biphenylene units form a double-layer arrangement in the interlayer.
