Traditionally, small animals have been kept in many kindergartens in Japan to provide some positive effect on children's development. However, our previous study revealed several problems related to keeping rabbits at kindergartens in Hiroshima prefecture. Those problems were identified as unsanitary condition of animal housing and teachers' low awareness about animals. As a result, we sent newsletters teaching about keeping animals to 47 kindergartens in Hiroshima prefecture for the improvement of teachers' awareness about animals. Results suggest the possibility that teachers' efforts to improve animal conditions could be improved by regular newsletter reading. Furthermore, most teachers indicated that their awareness and knowledge of animals at kindergartens have improved. In conclusion, newsletters could improve teachers' awareness about animals in kindergartens, but other information media should be developed to address the welfare of the animals.
