Age and Growth of Red Tongue Sole (Cynoglossus joyneri) in the Central Seto Inland Sea, Japan

We used otoliths to measure age and growth of red tongue sole Cynoglossus joyneri collected by small trawl nets from the Central Seto Inland Sea, Japan, from November 1998 to March 2000. We observed thin and clear rings on otoliths of all specimen except small fish and determined ring formation to mainly occur from April to July. Maximum age was 5 years for females and 4 years for males. The von Bertalanffy growth equation for both sexes was estimated as: TLt = 265.2 (1-e-0.49 (t+1.20)), where TLt is the total length (mm) at t (year).
