We attempted to estimate bamboo expansion after the Great East Japan Earthquake in the Kitakami area, Ishinomaki City, Miyagi Prefecture using satellite remote sensing image classification. Pleiades-1A image obtained on April 30, 2015 and WorldView-3 image obtained on April 29, 2019 were used for the classification by a support vector machine (SVM). The accuracy of the user and producer for the bamboo category were 98.8% and 85.0%, respectively, in the Pleiades-1A image, and they are 91.0% and 81.0%, respectively, in the WorldView-3 image. The overall accuracy for the Pleiades-1A image and WorldView-3 image were 93.0% and 91.0%, respectively. On the classified images, tiny bamboo areas appeared on deciduous broadleaf forest area and they were considered as classification errors. The suitable season to distinguish the bamboo from the deciduous broadleaf tree is before appearance of new leaves on the deciduous trees. Obvious bamboo expansion was recognized in some area by comparison of 2015 Pleiades-1A and the 2019 WorldView-3 images. The lack of the bamboo management may cause its expansion after the earthquake.
