In the present study, the authors performed echocardiography in the dogs with patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), the observation of ductus arteriosus and the examination of the shunt blood flow velocity were conducted. In addition, in the angle formed by Doppler beam and shunt blood flow (Doppler-angle), and the distance between the start points and regions of interest (ROI-distance) were compared between the right and left parasternal approaches. In examinations of five dogs, pulmonary hypertension was denied. The longitudinal view of ductus arteriosus was observed clearly in the left parasternal approach with B-mode, the shunt blood flow velocity in the right parasternal approach was decreased significantly compared to that of values in the left (p<0.05). Furthermore, in the left parasternal approach, ROI-distance was decreased significantly compared to that of values in the right (p<0.05). On the other hand, Doppler- angle had not shown significant differences between right and left parasternal approaches (p=0.686). In examinations of the shunt blood velocity in PDA, because only the examination in the right parasternal approach has a possibility of under estimation, the examination in the left parasternal approach which provides the details of ductus arteriosus orifice should be performed.
