Comparison of Natural Vegetation and Agricultural Crops with Respect to CO₂-fertilization Effect

Abstract

Agricultural land-use decreases the net terrestrial uptake of atmospheric carbon that is induced by the CO₂-fertilization. The reversion of the land to nature that may be possible due to an increasing crop yield would not increase this net uptake while the energy input into agroecosystems grows proportionally to the yield.
