In the early Kaga-han there were two schools of carpenters, Kenninjl school and Shltennojl school, and some other leading families of carpenters, each of which Inherited its ovrn technique. On the investigation of their buildings, some of then enable us to guess right which school's work from the number of rafters used between the columns. The rafters' arrangement in the co 1 umn spac I ng of the front part of the buildings is thought to have been regarded as especially important. On the investigation of KIVAR1 of those buildings on the basis of the construction manuals of each school, we often discover the actual sizes of small parts different from those of their manuals. But even though the sizes given by the inherited manuals were not used in the actual designing, we know from the coincidence of the number of the rafters between the columns that any chief carpenter In those days was familiar with the technique of his own school.
