The purpose of this study is to acquire fundamental engineering data that will help prevent fall type accidents caused by infants climbing over handrailings. Based on our experimental findings we were able to deduce the following: 1. Even when the height of a handrailing is 1100mm, children 105cm and taller are able to climb over the handrailing with relative ease. Therefore in such a case, we need to give careful consideration to a design which keeps infants a distance of 600mm or more away from the handrailing. 2. When the height of the foothold section of the handrailing is 700mm, children 105cm and taller can easily climb their way up and over it. 3. If the width of the foothold is made less than 10mm, it is difficult for children under 105cm to climb up on it. 4. When a foothold-type section is installed on a handrailing, the height of a safely designed handrailing should be determined by using the top end of the foothold as the starting point for height measurement.
