The design principle used to dimension eaves in the Middle Ages was fundamentally different from that used in the HIKIKOMI-TARUKI method prevalent in the early modern ages.
In this study, restorations of the eaves of buildings in the Middle Ages were carried out to verify a hypothesis that the eave-dimensioning method used then was not based on the depth of the eaves, but on determining the positions of tomesaki (joints) of kioi and kayaoi members on a hip rafter in relation to its center line.
This method will be referred to as the TOMESAKI method based on this result.
