This study clarifies the extent to which people who live in areas near rivers consider disaster risks when choosing their residential location and the extent to which flood risk or lack thereof influences peoples’ residential choice or way of thinking about disaster risks. A questionnaire survey was conducted in Azumacho and Takasaka, Higashimatsuyama City. Most respondents emphasized economy and convenience when choosing a residential location, whereas few respondents emphasized disaster safety. A difference was observed in emphasizing safety against disaster inside and outside the inundation area, but no significant difference was observed in collecting information on disaster risks.
