Low-rise apartments have a higher risk of criminal victimization than other types of housing. This study aimed to gain insight to promote crime-proof low-rise rental apartments through questionnaire surveys of residents of both certified “security apartments” and general apartments. General apartment residents who valued site lighting and emergency alarm systems were likely to recognize the economic value of certification. Residents of security apartments were less fearful in their units and more likely to greet residents in the same building and neighborhood. Finally, we suggested the need to provide information to increase residents’ awareness to have them choose security apartments again.
