The dynamic characteristics of earth pressures on the sides of an embedded large-scale-shaking-table foundation when subjected to harmonic excitations are studied. The investigation is focused on what value of the foundation responses is related to the earth pressures. The observed earth pressures indicate that the lateral earth pressures are strongly related to the horizontal displacement of the foundation for frequencies less than the predominant frequency of the surface layers, while the earth pressures have close connection with the velocity motion of the foundation for higher frequencies. The numerical analyses are performed with use of a parallel lumped-mass-system for the lateral two-surface-layers, whose results are in good agreement with the observed results.
