The purpose of this study is to define the concept "subsystem" of the building production system and to make clear various rules of the total system. In this paper "subsystem" is treated as a combination of both the physical portion of buildings and the job through which it is excuted. In the field of architecture, in order to grasp the function and performance of subsystems, it is effective that we consider the subsystem in relation to its own spatial domain. This point has already been accepted as for some building components such as sanitary units. But it has remained difficult to define the spatial domain assigned to components such as partition system that are axially allocated. In this paper, the spatial domain is characterized by its boundary, and the boundary section is classified into three types. (1) a straight line with one point defined on it. (2) a half line (ray). (3) a segment of a line.
