Restoration of historic timber structures through complete dismantlement, although widely accepted and practiced in Japan, is still a rare practice in Europe and for buildings other than framed timber structures. This report reflects on experiences in the restoration of the Church of the Transfiguration at Kizhi Pogost in Russia. This restoration involves lifting the structure and then dismantling and restoring tiers from bottom to the top. We analyzed the strengths, weaknesses, and special conditions of this method, and considered the possibility of applying it in other circumstances.
