In order to facilitate the application of algorithm into architectural design, VPL (Visual Programming Language), such as Grasshopper, is playing an important role in today’s industry. This paper first examines the state of implementation and problems of VPL through the results obtained by questionnaire conducted on architectural offices and general contractors in Japan. The paper then identifies the characteristics of VPL users and their use of VPL in the workflow, which were obtained from the interview. The results demonstrate the practical profit and the problems of using VPL in architectural design practices.
