THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE URBAN DESIGN SYSTEM IN THE CENTER OF SHANGHAI : The international collaboration between Japan and China to draw up the general planning of roadside landscape along Nanjingxilu

Abstract

This is the international collaboration with the Bureau of the urban planning in People's Government of Jingan District and Osaka City University and Tongji University in China, intends to drawing up the urban design system along the Nanjingxilu, the main street through the center of Shanghai in China. This system aims to create the symbolized and attractive roadside landscape, taking account of the harmonization of the road improvement and roadside land use. As a consequence of this collaboration, the People's Government of Jingan District enacted the Provisional Regulation of Road-side Landscape along Nanjingxilu on January 1, 1999, and put the general plan and technical design manual into practice.
