Abstract

The purpose of this study is to clarify the relationship between the spatial composition of the riverside settlement and the occupation of the inhabitants.

In this study, old river maps and old geographical literatures were used to consider the relationship between the spatial composition of the settlement and the occupation

As a result, spatial composition of the riverside settlement is categorized into three types; ①nucleated settlement ②dispersed settlement ③linear village. In addition, it was suggested that occupation related to river, shipping business and fishery etc. influenced the spatial composition of the settlement.
