In 2001, Meiko Electronics, a manufacturer of printed circuit boards, established its first overseas plant. This large-scale production facility in Guangzhou provided Meiko with an early mover advantage and allowed the company to obtain a leading position in its industry. Based on interviews with those involved in creation of this facility, this case study traces the process by which the plant was established and reveals the key success factors, most notably, Meiko's strength in sales and its forward-looking investments in production equipment and personnel.
