The aim of this paper is to describe the process of reorganization in the beef market after the beef liberalization started in April, 1991. Since the liberalization, the Japanese beef market has increasingly linked with the international distribution system. The competition among distributors in dealing with imported beef has become severe. As a result, the meat market is being reorganized by the general trading companies and the meat processing companies. Their marketing strategies aim at not only the domestic market but also world markets including Asian and European areas. Consequently, it is possible that the amount of the imported beef will increase and beef production in Japan will be reduced.
