The synergistic extraction of copper(II), zinc(II) and cadmium(II) with monothiothenoyltrifluoroacetone (STTA=HR) and 1, 10-phenanthroline (phen=S) was examined. The main synergistic adducts extracted into the organic phase were found to be MR2S (M=Cu, Zn, Cd) and MR2S2(M=Zn). The rather small stability constant for CuR2S is attributable to the Jahn-Teller effect. The results were applied to establish a method of separation of cadmium(II) from zinc(II).
