Ultrastructural Features of the Rabbit Proximal Tubules

Abstract

The unique ultrastructure of the epithelial cells that line the entire length of the proximal tubule have been described. In particular, scanning electron microscopy has been used to illustrate the varied nature of the apical, lateral and basal surfaces of cells located along P₁, P₂ and P₃. The functional implication of the highly specialized microanatomy of the basal cell surface remains an interesting area of investigation.
