The purpose of this study is to think on the concept of Natural capital in the Japanese farm village, in the case of “Kounotori-Hagukumu-Nouhou (KHN)” in Toyooka city. KHN is a special method of agriculture. This agricultural method leaves the water on the rice fields for three months longer than usual, thus creating biological diversity.
In the case of this study, the Natural Capital is the Stork. This study clarifies the influence that the stork has had on rural society. The rice grown by the KHN method has become famous, and is sold for a high price. In addition, this study clarifies that the existence of the stork brought about various social changes to people. People felt the stork was an amenity. As a result, it was concluded that the farm village which could keep a stork alive was rich. It was conjectured that such consciousness change for agriculture and the relations with living creatures were important for the rich social formation.
