(S)-(-)-Vertinolide 1 was synthesized via the tetronic acid derivative 6 from (S)-(-)- tetrahydro-2-methyl-5-oxo-2-furancarboxylic acid 3. (±)-Vertinolide was also synthesized from (±)-3.
