(1) Force-area relations for the monolayers of a number of branched-chain fatty acids have been investigated.
(2) These monolayers are of the liquidexpanded type, on acidic substrates, and forcearea curves fit the Langmuir equation well.
(3) Constants F0 and a0 in the Langmuir equation have been calculated from the curves. It has been shown that there is a definite regularity between these constants and the structure of the molecules in the films.
(4) It was revealed that the structure of phthioic acid is not of the trialkylacetic acid type as postulated by Stenhagen and Robinson.
