The νC=O and the νO−H absorption of carboxylic acids were measured and the following conclusion was obtained; 1) The carboxylic acids carrying a proton-accepting group at α position give three absorption bands at ca. 1790cm−1, ca. 1760cm−1 and 1740∼1710cm−1, which can be assigned to the trans form of the monomeric acid, the cis form of the mono-meric acid and the dimer, respectively. 2) The Δνmax between the cis and the trans forms can be explained from an intramolecular hydrogen bonding between carboxylic hydroxyl and carbonyl groups.
