The reddish-violet complex of vanadium with xylenol orange has been studied spectrophotometrically, and the conditions for using xylenol orange as a reagent for the determination of trace amounts of vanadium have been established. The complex shows a maximum absorption at 562 mμ, and the molar extinction coefficient of the complex is found to be 24000. It is a 1:1 complex and has a formation constant of 2.8×106 under the conditions studied. Such anions as oxalate, citrate and EDTA inhibit the color formation of the complex. Some of the interfering cations can, however, be completely or partially masked by adding a fluoride solution.
