Double malonates of some of the rare earths with potassium having formula K5Ln(C3H2O4)4 were synthesized. The lattice parameters of the compounds were determined by X-ray powder diffractometry. Infrared absorption spectroscopy was employed to throw some light on the nature of Ln–O bonding, while the thermoanalytical techniques were made use of in proposing the thermal decomposition mechanism of some of the double malonates.
