The ideal of liturgy seems to be the expression of the human longing for the Visio Beatifica. I met with various experiences during this summer travelling Eastern and Western Europe. In Soviet Russia, I could visit Zagorsk Monastery near Moscow crowded with pilgrims. In Spain, there was a Semana Internacional de Estudios "Psallite sapienter" by the Universa Laus at Pamplona. The most stabilized Latin Rite is now in the agony of rebirth for the people of God at large. At the Xth Congress of the International Musicological Society at Ljubljana, there was nothing special for our problem, but Jugoslavia is very interesting as the point of contact with East and West. At Ravenna, the magnificent arts of the early Christendom were still living with the liturgy. In the Greek Monastery at Grottaferrata near Rome, which was founded by St. Nilo at the beginning of the XIth century, the Byzantine liturgy was maintained up to the present. The union of the East and West seems to be a leading star for our Aesthetics of Liturgy.
