Italian architecture was the most important in Europe, during the first three centuries of the Christian era. One of the basilican, the great church of S. Maria Maggiore is magnificent, but much altered. And St. Paul outside the walls provides a typical basilican form, but it was brandnew. Apart from these, S. Sabina gives us very austere aspect of a basilican church in Rome. We must be added the circular churches such as the S. Constanza. In Ravenna S. Apollinare Nuovo, and S. Apollinare in Classe are both of basilican type and celebrated church of S. Vitale is octagonal of Byzantine.
