1. A carbohydrate-amino acid complex was prepared from α1-acid glycoprotein of human plasma by digesting the protein by sialidase and by pronase successively. The complex was homogeneous in electrophoresis, ultracentrifugation and column chromatography.
2. From the ultracentrifugal experiments, molecular weight of the complex was estimated to be 2, 800 which corresponds to one fourth of the sialic acid-free carbohydrate moiety of the glycoprotein.
3. The complex contained glucosamine, hexoses and fucose in such an amount as contained in the parent glycoprotein. Aspartic acid and threonine were found to be separately bound to the polysaccharide of the complex possibly through their carboxyl or amide groups.
Supports were provided by grants from the Ministry of Education, Japan, and the Rockefeller Foundation, GA BMR 58131.
