Adsorption behavior was studied of microgram amounts of silver, gold, and platinum by activated carbon, carbon black, graphitized carbon black, and graphite from hydrochloric and nitric acid solutions. After adsorption, the adsorbent was ashed in the presence of an alkali-metal salt. The three metals were then determined by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Activated carbon and carbon black are excellent adsorbents for gold. Phenomena that might be termed "coadsorption" of silver or platinum were observed. Less than 3μg of silver, more than 1μg of gold, and more than 30μg of platinum could be satisfactorily collected from 100ml of 0.05M hydrochloric acid solution by 100mg of activated carbon. Many metal ions and several salts do not interfere. The proposed procedure was applied to the determination of traces of gold in silicate ores.
