Triphenylselenonium chloride, in the presence of iodide ion, reacts with bismuth ion to give a beautiful red orange precipitate. Various formulas had been proposed as to the composition of the precipitate, and at last, the authors were able to confirm its composition by application of polarography and a radioactive iodine, I131, imported from United States of America as follows : namely, bismuth ion and iodine ion were reacted at first to give a complex anion, BiI4-, and this was combined with triphenylselenonium ion, (C6H5)3 Se+, to form a precipitate of (C6H5)3 Se·BiI4.
