A recent visit to Japan, as a guest of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, was the occasion for me to get aquainted with the Physical Society of Japan and its many activities. I participated in the Niigata meeting and had the pleasure to meet and exchange views with your president, professor Date, and your past president, professor Konuma. There are many domains where a closer collaboration between the PSJ and the EPS should be very fruitful. It is my hope that the two societies will get to know each other better. There are many physical societies in Europe and some of them, like the British Inistitute of Physics and the German Physical Society (DPG), are very well known. What is the EPS ?
