With the view to utilize the bamboo grass as the winter feeds which distributes widely in mounty districts of Hokkaido, the authors prepared bamboo grass silage and examined its feeding value by the digestion experiments (with a ram and a goat) and the feeding trial with two dairy cows.
The results of the digestion experiments are given in the following table
The bamboo grass silage contains 7.65% starch value and 1.12% digestible true protein, so it is more fibrous but higher in digestible protein than the corn silage.
When two cows whose daily milk yields had been both 11kg. were fed 20kg. bamboo grass silage in place of the same amount of corn silage, they produced 12% in milk and 17.82% in milk fat less than in the control periods. The main cause of their yield decrease should be attributed to the underfeeding of 570g. starch value daily during the experimental periods, because they could not eat all and left about 6kg. of hard stalk parts. Of course the feeding value of the bamboo grass silage is inferior to the corn silage, but it may be used availably at the plateau dairy farms as the succulent feeds in winter.
