Water is one of representative materials of the planet Earth. The Geochemical Society of Japan has a permanent session of the annual meeting presenting the research results concerning water, material and energy circulation in the Earth’s interior, with a view to share understanding the important roles of water for our planet. Geochemical research studies in Japan started from chemical analysis of hot spring water in the early 19th century, and studies of hot springs have developed into diverse fields related to water behaviour in the Earth. In the joint special volumes of two journals, “Chikyukagaku” (Geochemistry) and “Chigaku Zasshi” (Journal of Geopraphy), we introduce the cutting-edge studies of water and hydrogen species in solid Earth. In “Chikyukagaku”, studies related to deep fluid are compiled in six review articles. In “Chigaku Zasshi”, recent hot spring researches closely related to geology and environments are reviewed also in six review articles.
