The purpose of this study is to analyze both characteristics of business travels and the factors affecting it, through an analysis of assessment of flights from Pusan to Fukuoka and business travel activities of firms in Taegu. The data in this study were obtained from interviews with 73 firms in Taegu doing export business to Japan, and the following four points are analyzed: (1) characteristics of business travels, (2) relationships between selection of Fukuoka airport and distribution of customer firms in Japan, (3) selection of flights from Pusan to Fukuoka, and (4) relationships between selection and assessment of flights from Pusan to Fukuoka. The results are summarized as follows; 1. The business travels from firms in Taegu to customer firms in Japanese cities are classified into five types. The characteristics are: (1) many firms use domestic flights from Taegu to Seoul or Pusan, (2) there are differences between the air flight going to Japan and returning to Korea, and (3) many Taegu firms visit several cites in Japan in a single business travel. 2. An analysis of variance and correlation analysis showed that (1) correlation coefficient between selection of airports and location of importers is high and (2) Fukuoka-oriented firms use Fukuoka airport more frequently than other Tokyo-Osaka- or Nagoya-oriented firms. 3. As a result of multidimensional scaling (MDS) analysis, it made clear that the rate of selecting Taegu firms the flight between Pusan and Fukuoka is higher than the other flights between Korean and Japanese nonmetropolitan cities. 4. A cluster analyses and multiple regression analyses revealed that assessment of convenience of flights from Pusan to Fukuoka identified by Taegu firms values reasonable fare of the flight and good access from airport to civic center as well as the railway station for transfer, reflecting the importance of access to customer firms in Japan.
