Sawada, one of the staff, has performed the experiments on the Lutembacher's syndrom in dog. In his study he has reported that the maximal limit of mitral insufficiency for survival is 1/6 excision of all chordae tendinae of mitral valve, but this limit is enlarged to 2/6 under the condition of patent foramen ovale. In view of the above mentioned experiments, the authors have observed those histological changes in myocardium that might be produced with the results obtained as follows : 1. Under the condition of patent foramen ovale, myocardial changes caused by mitral insufficiency, which particulary found in papillar muscles, are less than that are without foramen ovale. 2. In view of these facts, the authors suggest that if the patients with mitral valvular disease are given artificial interatrial septal defect, their symptoms may be improved.
