The layered manganocuprate Ln3Ba2Mn2Cu2O12 (Ln = lanthanide) consists of an intergrowth of single rock-salt layers with quadruple oxygen-deficient perovskite layers. This structure is stabilized by a particular ionic size at the Ln site (Ln = Sm, Eu, Gd). The ground state changes from a spin glass to a ferromagnetic phase with decreasing size of the Ln ion (Sm → Gd).
