Abstract

The Research Sub-Committee on Precast Concrete Members with Granulated Blast Furnace Slag Fine Aggregate of the Concrete Committee of the Japan Society of Civil Engineers has been conducting research for two years on how to ensure the quality of precast products, in view of the shortage of skilled workers in the near future. The results of this research have been compiled as a Concrete Library No 155. Granulated blast furnace slag, whether used as fine powder or fine aggregate, improves chloride penetration resistance and frost resistance. Especially when used as fine aggregate, granulated blast furnace slag sand (BFS) is known to reduce the time-dependent strain such as drying shrinkage strain and creep. This guideline covers the points that must be kept in regarding design, manufacture, and construction to ensure durable precast products that use to advantage the characteristics of BFS.
