A New Guinean wild sugar cane, 28 NG 251, is a type of Saccharum robustum that was introduced into Taiwan, from Hawaii, in 1936. The chromosome numbers of this cane are n=40, 2n=80, showing no irregularities in the meiotic division. These chromosome numbers differ from those reported in Hawaii for the same cane. At Taiwan, we could not obtain viable seeds by selfing S. robustum.
