The Relationship between Giemsa Bands and Late Replicating Heterochrochromatin in Human Chromosome Complement

Abstract

Giemsa bands after the urea-treatment technique and the DNA replication patterns by ³H-thymidine autoradiography are compared in the same metaphase cells by the application of two different procedures, with particular reference to the intensity and distribution of the labeling patterns and the Giemsa bands. It was found that chromosome regions bearing dark Giemsa bands showed the late replication. Exceptions to this are the late labeling X-chromosome (X_L) in the female cells and areas near the centromeres on chromosome No. 9.
