Abstract

Nikasyou is an essence extarcted from certain plants growing wild in China. It has been used for improvemet of chronic hepatic diseases and in lipid metabolism in human clinics. It can also normalize the levels of blood glucose, aspartic acid transferase (AST), and alanin aminotransferase (ALT). In this study, Nikasyou was administered to non insulin-dependent diabetic cat. When it was brought in, the 10-year-old male cat had dysbasia, various neurological symptoms, and urinary problems, and was diagnosed as having diabetes mellitus, so treatment with insulin was initiated. Six months later, insulin treatment was no longer necessary, and soon the neurological symptorr disappeared. The animal underwent diet therapy, but still showed high levels of AST, ALT, blood glucose, and hepatopathy. So the animal was medicated with Nikasyou for 4 weeks. The levels of AST, ALT, and blood glucose measured after the administration of Nikasyou decreased by 30, 20, and 40%, respectively. Fructosamin (FRA) and triglycerid (TG) also decreased by 35% and 80%. Since Nikasyou is effective for hepatopathy and lipid metabolic disorders, it seemed that the administration of Nikasyou can help improve general conditions related to diabetes mellitus.
