We studied changes in the quantities of foods purchased between 1965 and 1985 based on “Yearly Amount of Quantities by Commodities per Household” from “Annual Report on the Family Income and Expenditure Survey”.
Results are as follows:
1) The purchase decreased for many foods which showed an increase tendency or ambiguous tendency during the years surveyed previously.
2) In terms of groups of foods, a decrease after an increase was observed in vegetables and fruits.
3) The tendency observed between 1965 and 1979 of (1) marked inclination for more expensive items within the same or similar food groups, (2) increased purchase of fish, meat, vegetables, etc., and (3) westernization in the respect of raw materials and seasonings was not evident in this survey; they appeared to be stagnant.
4) Changes in the quantity of purchase during 21 years from 1965 to 1985 showed an overall increase, but the increase became gradual after 1973, particularly after 1980.
