Ferroelectric nematic liquid crystal (FNLC) is a groundbreaking material that possesses ferroelectricity, liquid crystallinity, and high symmetry. For the application of FNLC, controlling polarization and molecular orientation is necessary, but there are many unexplored elements in the molecular orientation properties of FNLC. In this study, we focused on pretilt, which is molecular tilting at the interface, and the polarity of the alignment film as factors affecting the polarization state. We found that the presence of a pretilt, which breaks the out-of-plane symmetry at the interface, causes a remarkable difference between the two stable states at the interface, and only one state is obtained.
