An exhaustive study is made in this paper to elucidate to what extent ge- as a verb-prefix exercises, as far as The Saxon Chronicle (Parker MS.) is concerned, the function of making an intransitive verb transitive as H. C. Wyld maintains it does in his Short History of English (London 1952) p.267. The following items have been concluded: 1. Ge-compound forms of only seven verbs of motion perform the function of the transitivization. These compound forms, however small the variety of their verb stems may be, deserve attention, because, for one thing, they are more distinct in meaning from the simple forms than any other ge-compound is from its simple form, and, for another, these verbs of motion are in common and frequent use. 2. In order to realize better, ge-compounds other than transitivization will be examined. There are two of them: one is the pleonastic (often intensive) ge- and the other the old ge- with a collective meaning. But neither of them has played so important a role as the ge- with the transitivizing function, because the former, though of frequent occurrence, has almost lost its meaning and the latter is found only in two verbs. This may have led H. C. Wyld to emphasize the transitivizing function of the OE prefix. 3. F. Mosse, among others, distinguishes six groups for ge-, in a striking contrast with H. C. Wyld. But my study shows that it is quite improper to set up more than three groups above mentioned for ge-, as far as this text is concerned. 4. Two or three out of six groups of ge- suggested by F. Mosse belong to one pleonastic group in my classification. It is sometimes open to question whether any ge- belongs to the pleonastic group or not, but in my study, such phrases as iii tunas genam. 571 18 28 ; nam pone tuun. 777 50 26, where the simple form and the ge-compound are interchangeable without much change of meaning, helped me to identify the pleonastic group. 5. It is a future duty imposed on the present writer to throw light on the historical development of these groups of ge-.
