1) When the writers investigated the fluctuation of basal metabolism over a period of one year in three male patients suffering from endemic goitre in J e h o 1, in two cases the fluctuation was very slight but it could be considered being within the physiological scope. The other case clinically presented hyperthyroidism and the basal metabolism was observed to reach 37.0 % at the highest.
2) The writers estimated the basal metabolism of 45 goitre patients in Cheng-t e, Jehol (incidence 45.7 %) and obtained the following results.
a) 77.8 % of the total eases were in a condition of normal thyroid function (Euthyroidism) and the average value of their basal metabolism was 6.2 %.
b) 22.2 % was in Hyperthyroidism : their basal metabolism averaged 31.8 ro.
e) Although in most eases basal metabolism and pulse rate werein parallel, it was not always so.
d) Basal metabolism tended to rise according to the degree of enlargement of the thyroid gland.
e) The writers dividing the disease roughly into Struma diffusa and St. nodosa, made clinical investigations, and they found that basal metabolism was slightly higher in the latter.
