Abstract

New guidelines from European society of parenteral and enteral nutrition recommended individual nutrition–intervention based on biomarker in patients with malignancy. On the other hand, report published in 2011 suggested cancer–promoting inflammation as one of cancer hallmarks. Additionally, systemic inflammation is also described as one of covariates for screening of malnutrition, the so called GLIM criteria, proposed in 2018. Based on these backgrounds, clinical significance of systemic inflammatory response in cancer patients has again come under the global spotlight. In this section, we retrospectively evaluated supporting evidence including our studies to elucidate the correlation between systemic inflammation, sarcopenia, oncological outcome and postoperative infectious complication, especially in patients with gastrointestinal cancer.
