Abstract
The author has studied the occurrences and correspondences of the initials _??__??__??__??_ in modern Shan-hsi dialects, and he presumes that, the value of each of these initial sounds at the time of the T'ang dynasty must have been as follows; _??__??_:[mb] - [m], _??__??_ (_??_): [nd] - [nd] - [n], _??_ (_??_): [ng] - [η](in some dialects [η9]). It is worthy of note, from the view point of linguistic geography in China, that, although such alternations are still perceivable in the so-called. Sino-Tibetan Border-land, there is not a trace to be found in the dialects of hsi-an (former Ch'ang-au) and its vicenity and the whole South Shan-hsi.
