The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between ENSO-events and the gener-ation, development and movement of typhoons by comparing ENSO years with anti-ENSO years. The results are summarized as follows:
1. In the ENSO years the number of typhoons generated is smaller than that in the anti-ENSO years, but many of those that develop are strong.
2. The generation of typhoons is closely related to the sea surface temperature (SST) conditions over the Northwest Pacific Ocean. In the ENSO years, the area in which typhoons are generated shifts toward the southeast in accordance with a positive SST anomaly.
3. Typhoon tracks show clear differences between the ENSO and the anti-ENSO years. During the ENSO years, many typhoons move westward and reach the South China Sea in summer, but in the autumn many typhoons recurve and pass the southeastern waters of Japan. In contrast, during the anti-ENSO years, typhoons move mostly northwestward and affect the west of Japan or reach the East China Sea in summer, but move westward and to the South China Sea in autumn.
