Eleven Mio–Pliocene bryophyte fossils found in Japan were examined. Nine of them had been previously reported as Hepaticites sp. (Marchantiophyta) or Muscites sp. (Bryophyta), and the other two were examined in this study for the first time. After detailed morphological observations of the nine specimens, a species of the lycophyte spikemoss genus Selaginella (Tracheophyta), a species of Lophocoleaceae (Marchantiophyta), and a species of Hypnales (Bryophyta) were identified. A species of Mniaceae (Bryophyta) and a species of Jungermanniales (Marchantiophyta) have been reported on the basis of these two additional specimens.
